Our History
The vision for the Nation’s Capital Chapter was conceived by LaToria Eason-Brent and Julia Miles-Davis, who began their efforts in July 2016 to establish a second Jack and Jill of America, Inc. chapter in the District of Columbia.
After the sudden passing of LaToria’s husband, David, in the spring of 2015, she realized that establishing a second chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. in DC would provide a nurturing environment for her young daughters as well as for other families that were a part of the District’s growing population. LaToria reached out to Julia, a long-time friend from neighborhood mommy-and-me playdates, to start researching the process to start an interest group.
On April 9, 2017, a social was held at Julia’s home where 33 mothers attended to learn more about the newly formed group. Following this meeting, LaToria and Julia had one on one discussions with interested mothers and held the group’s first two activities: a gathering at the National Math Festival at the Washington Convention Center on April 22, 2017 and a group activity that focused on internet safety for children held at the Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library on April 23, 2017 in SE, Washington, DC with Fox 5 correspondent Reginald Corbitt, founder of SafeCyber.
The Nation’s Capital Mothers Group (NCMG) held its first interest meeting in May 2017. With the support of the executive committee and the tireless dedication of the organizers, NCMG submitted an application to become a provisional group in July 2017. The National Executive Board of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. notified the group’s organizers on August 1, 2017 that NCMG was granted provisional group status. From that day, 29 mothers worked tirelessly throughout the 2017-2018 program year to plan engaging children’s activities and establish business protocols in preparation to become a chapter of Jack and Jill.
Eighteen mothers traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the 43rd Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Biennial Convention to introduce NCMG to delegates and members of the organization. On July 27, 2018, along with nine other groups, NCMG received approval to become a chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.!
The Nation’s Capital Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was chartered on November 18, 2018 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, DC. Nation’s Capital is committed to becoming an exemplary Jack and Jill of America, Inc. chapter, supporting the mission and vision of the organization and setting examples for our children and the community at large.
Our Grade Groups
Nation’s Capital’s grade groups are named after Smithsonian museums that are not only iconic representations of our city, but also reflect the evolution of children's curiosity and understanding. Our little ones discover more of the world around them with every activity; school-age children begin to see the link between history and nature and the impact of both on who and what we are today; for tweens, the sky is the limit as they begin to form their goals and aspirations; and our teens are readying themselves to continue the legacy of those who have come before us.
Pre-School - Pre-Kindergarten, Discovery Theater
